Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is one of the most established and heavily researched psychological treatments and has been found to be effective for a wide range of psychological problems. CBT is a collaborative, goal-directed treatment that helps people understand their problems and develop new strategies to alleviate their distress and increase their quality of life.
As the above diagram illustrates, CBT focuses on the associations between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. That is, in each situation, a person experiences a number of thoughts or interpretations, feelings, and behaviours and the underlying principle suggests that it's the way we interpret situations and behave in situations that influences and reinforces the way we feel. Thus, if you can learn how to change the way you think and behave, then you can also change the way that you feel. It is with this new understanding and toolbox of strategies that you will be able to achieve lasting change and be able to continue to tackle problems in your everyday life. Examples of other evidence-based strategies that may be incorporated into your treatment at WPG include Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based strategies.
